Goodridge. Charles Medyett. Narrative of a Voyage to the South
Seas, and the Shipwreck of the Princess of Wales Cutter, with
and Account of Two Years Residence on an Uninhabited Island.
Exeter.W. C. Featherstone. 1843. Fifth Edition. 8vo. Green cloth
blind stamp motif to front and back, gilt titles to spine.
Tissue guarded frontis with Authors ink signature along top
blank margin, title, printed copy letter dated 1944 from St
James Palace acknowledging Queen's receipt of the book [2],
Preface [2], index [2], Opinions of the Press [6], Subscribers
List [26], pp172, with two tissue guarded full page engravings,
Errata slip. Manuscript gift inscription on front free endpaper
dated 3rd July 1845 to James Ranken Fergusson and William Ranken
Fergusson from. their Papa. Baronet James Ranken Fergusson's
father was Sir William Fergusson, BT., F.R.C.S., F.R.S.
(1808–1877) a notable surgeon pioneering much work in repair of
limbs rather than amputation and developed surgery to aid the
cleft palate. James Ranken Fergusson would have been 10 years
old at the time of this gift. The subscribers list is very
comprehensive including arctic explorers William Scoresby and
Admiral Sir Erasmus Ommanney. Covers a little bumped at edges.
All pages and illustrations tight and bright with a good
strong letterpress imprint. This is a simple narrative of a
shipwreck, survival and later rescue to Van Diemens Land
(Tasmania) where the author lived for some time. A good book
with an interesting provenance, telling more than one tale. |
