De Wit, Frederick. Barbariae & Guineae Maritimi ą Freto Gibralter
ad Fluvium Gambię cum insulis Salsis Flandricis et Canaricis
Apud F. de Wit. c. 1680. Engraved Sea Chart, hand coloured in
outline. 19 x 22.25 ins with .5 ins blank border. This chart is
part of De Wit's Sea Atlas published from 1671. The Chart
follows the coast of North West Africa including Spain,
Gibraltar to Gambia. The Atlantic Island groups of the Azores,
The Canaries, Madeira and Cape Verde are all recorded. The chart
is decorated with an elaborate title cartouche with people and
animals native to the area. There are two Compass Rose, many
rhumb lines and six vignettes of sailing vessels, two of which
indicate battles. The chart is age toned to edges with a small
split to lower blank edge at early centre fold line. Print and
hand colouring is good and strong. An attractive early chart. |
