Engraved by B. Baker and published by George Nicol, April 12th 1796. Watermark J. Whatman 1794. Map size approx 700 x 490mm. Page size approx 752 x 570mm. From Staunton's An Authentic Account of an Embassy from the King of Great Britain to the Emperor of China. A record of part of the journey undertaken by John Barrow while serving with the Earl of McCartney's Embassy to the Emperor of China from Tartary to Canton. With many place and river names this map also records barometer, chronometer and thermometer readings, together with lunar observations. Centre fold with mis-fold, few very faint small fox spots, very good, clean, bright, uncoloured and interesting record of John Barrows exploration into China. Please refer to Cat. Barrow, John: Sketch of a Journey from Hang-Tchoo-Foo to Quang-Tchoo-Foo or Canton in China. 1796. Map size approx 700 x 490mm. Page size 752 x 570mm. Watermark by J Whatman 1794. Engraved by B. Baker and published by George Nicol, April 12th 1796. From Staunton's An Authentic Account of an Embassy from the King of Great Britain to the Emperor of China. A record of the second part of the journey undertaken by John Barrow while serving with the Earl of McCartney's Embassy to the Emperor of China from Tartary to Canton. The map covers an area of modern day Hangzhou, Nanchang, Lake Ooyanghu, Canton and Macau. Scale approx 30 miles to the inch with scales in English miles and Chinese Lys. This map features the Yang-tse-kiang and Pei-Kiang rivers and features many tributaries, lakes and mountains with comments on the geography, population and human activity in many locations at that time. "Numerous Villages and a vast population. Various manufactories of earthenware, bricks and tiles, carried on along the banks of the river." Light browning at centre fold line, very good condition, clean, bright, uncoloured and an interesting early English map of China. Please refer to Cat. Nos 90387 for complimentary map.
